State Bank to recruit 10500 workers

State Bank of Indiat will recruit about 10,500 employees during the current financial year to manage the growing business of the bank.
"This year, the bank would make 9,500 clerical level appointments and nearly 1,000 probationary officers to be inducted,"  SBI Chairman  Pratip Chaudhuri  stated.
The process would be completed by Dussehra, he added. According to the annual report of SBI, overall staff strength declined by 7,452 employees during the last fiscal.
As on March 31, 2012, the bank had a total permanent staff strength of 2,15,481, which included 80,404 officers, 95,715 clerical staff and the remaining 39,362 were sub-staff.
As stated in my blog earlier, a situation has arisen in all PSUs the need for new recruitment. Instead of engaging contract workers, new recruitment should be done. The unions have to pressure strongly for the same.

Dipankar Mukherjee passes away

Dipankar Mukherjee
Dipankar Mukherjee
Renowned trade union leader Dipankar Mukherjee (69), who passed away on Monday morning, was a brilliant parliamentarian with versatile capabilities.
Elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 1994 from West Bengal as a Communist Party of India (Marxist) member, Mr. Mukherjee played an important role in intervening in all crucial economic and industrial policy-related issues during his 12-year-long parliamentary stint till 2006.
Born in June 1943 in Kolkata, Mr. Mukherjee had a bright educational career. He graduated in electrical engineering from Banaras Hindu University and started his career in BHEL in Bhopal. He worked in a high position in Hindustan Fertiliser Corporation at the Ramagundam plant, in Andhra Pradesh. He quit as Additional Chief Engineer of Haldia Fertilisers and joined as a full-timer the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) in 1991. He was its national secretary until his demise. He also represented CITU in the Central Board of Trustees of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation.
Having extensive knowledge in industrial engineering and industrial economics across industries, particularly in power, fertilizers, and petroleum, he made useful contributions for the revival of industries and PSUs. He campaigned against the anti-PSU policies of successive governments.
Mr. Mukherjee's noted intervention was, of course, in the area of petrol-pricing. He was a major contributor to a Parliamentary Standing Committee Report on the Pricing of Petroleum Products in 2005, which brought the issue of high indirect taxes on petrol products to the fore, and criticised the concept of “under-recoveries,” which was based on “import-party pricing,”than actually incurred costs.
Mr. Mukherjee closely followed the issue of natural gas pricing and matters related to the KG-D6 gas block. Many of the anomalies, which were later nailed by the CAG report, were initially identified by him, a statement issued by the CITU said.
A prolific writer, Mr. Mukherjee wrote on trade union, economic and political issues. He used to contribute regularly to trade union and political journals. He wrote many pamphlets, notably on the nuclear deal between India and the U.S. and the Employees' Pension Scheme.
“I am grieved to hear the news of the demise of comrade Dipankar Mukherjee,” CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said in a condolence message

A GUIDE ON CL & SPECIAL CL

BSNL employees achieve major gain. Indefinite strike deferred

The indefinite strike of the BSNL employees, which was scheduled to start from  13-06-2012, has been deferred following an agreement reached between  the Forum of BSNL Unions & Associations and the BSNL Management. In the agreement that was signed on 12-06-2012, the BSNL Management has  agreed to settle the long pending demand of the employees, i.e. 78.2% IDA fixation.
It is the decision of the government that the wage revision of the Public Sector employees w.e.f. 01-01-2007 should be done by merging the Industrial Dearness Allowance up to 78.2% with the basic pay. However, in BSNL the wage revision was done by merging only 68.8% of the IDA with the basic pay. The employees have rightly been demanding that this injustice should be undone. The BSNL Management did not accept the demand on the plea that the Company is running into loss.
In the meanwhile, on 25-05-2012, the Management issued an order, granting all the 6th Central pay Commission recommended allowances to the ITS officers, who are on deputation to BSNL from government service. This  will create a heavy burden  on the financial position of the company. Inspite of that this decision was taken, since the Management is dominated by the ITS officers, who are on deputation.
Naturally, the employees also demanded that their major demands including 78.2% IDA fixation should be settled.  Forum of BSNL Unions & Associations, issued notice on 29-06-2012 for indefinite strike from 13-06-2012. The BSNL Management, instead of settling the demand, played a diversionary tactics. It kept the order revising the allowances of the ITS officers under abeyance and requested the Forum of BSNL Unions & Associations to call off it’s strike. However, the Forum was determined to go ahead with the struggle, which forced the Management to come forward for a settlement. An agreement is reached in the evening of 12-06-2012. Management agreed to do wage revision, based on 78.2% IDA merger. In view of the deteriorating financial position of the Company, the Forum agreed to defer the arrears payment, till the company’s financial position improves. Based on this, the strike call has been deferred. (INN)

Root out the corruption in BSNL

P&T Department was once the most efficient and non-corrupt department of the Government of India. But now, it can not be said of BSNL which was bifurcated from P&T in to Telecom and then in to BSNL. It has become one of the most corrupt if you consider  the large number of  vigilance cases against its employees, mostly top-level officers. The latest is the reported case against  the Chief General Manager of Calcutta Telecom Factory.
The so-called reforms on the lines of neo-liberalisation policy, the fast growing telecom sector, the entry of the profit motivated private companies as also the formation of BSNL from government to public sector along are some of the reasons which have increased the corruptions in BSNL. Outsourcing and contracts are breeding grounds for corruption. This opportunity is maximum utilised to the tilt by the corrupt minded  persons, jeopardising the future of the company itself. In the present society, when even the most respected are involved in corruptible practices, the corruption has lost its stigma. Accumulation of money has become the aim of the life for some.
How it can be fought? We have seen and are seeing that how the fight against corruption is weakened by the Government itself, which is expected to lead the same.
The time has come for  the workers of BSNL  to strengthen the fight against corruption, whether it is bribe taking from contractors / outsourcing, in the tenders etc. At the same time the exploitation of the contract workers, which is also a method of corrupt practice has to be stopped. A determined and committed workforce can do a lot to make the corrupt practices to be reduced, even if not complete eradication. However our aim should be zero toleration of corruption.

PFRDA Bill – Mobilise unions against the move to reintroduce PFRDA

As a part of its aggressive exercise to advance so-called 'reforms', the UPA-II government is proposing to reintroduce PFRDA, Insurance Bill etc. for which there is strong pressure from the MNCs, foreign governments and Indian Corporates. It could not be put through last time due to the strong opposition from the Left Parties as also from the UPA allies themselves. Now to favour the MNCs, Corporates etc. the Government is planning to reintroduce the bills. Mamata has opposed the PFRDA Bill and even if the bill can be passed with the support of BJP, will the government anger Mamata?
But the workers and their unions have to be extra vigilant. The Parliament March against PFRDA Bill has enthusiased the workers and pensioners. The struggle has to continue since PFRDA is an attack on the hard-earned money of the workers by handing over the same to the corporates to be put in the share Market, which may result in losing the entire money also.
NCCPA and AIBDPA have planned to organise sustained agitational programmes to compel the government to drop PFRDA

CPI-IW stands at 205 / DA from July 2012 to be 7%

All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 2001=100 for the month of April, 2012 increased by 4 points and stood at 205 (two hundred five). An increase by four points shows considerable price increase for essential items causing the burden for common man. It was in July 2011 the index raised by 4 points last time.

The point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-IW(General) for the month of April, 2012 is 10.22% as compared to 8.65% in March, 2012. Inflation based on Food Index attained the level of 10.66% in April, 2012 as compared to 8.16% in March, 2012. How ever even if the index raises considerably, the DA increment may not get changed. With four months CPI-IW available, its almost certain that the Dearness Allowance from July 2012 will stand at 72%, a hike of 7% from the current 65%
