A collection of commemorative stamps were displayed at the two –day district level philatelic exhibition, ‘PEARLPEX 2013’, which commenced at Snow Hall here on Wednesday.
Post Master General, Southern Region, Madurai, J. Charukesi, inaugurated the exhibition in the presence of Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Tuticorin Division, T. Baskaran.
During the function, Ms. Charukesi said that post offices would soon be equipped with core banking system.
The exhibition was a visual treat and a learning experience for the viewers. Students and visitors also learnt about the postal histories of Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II (1920-2005), the People’s Pope through a display of Vatican stamps. There were stamps from the Queen Victorian era, Buddhist era compound envelopes and bulk rate stamps. In addition, high value stamps and miniature sheets reading Endemic Species of Indian Biodiversity Hotspots, Heritage Monuments for Preservation, Lighthouses of India, Astrological Signs and others were sold during the event.
Revenue to the tune of Rs. 75, 000 was earned through the sale of stamps and miniature sheets, reliable sources told The Hindu .
Many philatelists from Tuticorin and its surrounding areas participated in the exhibition. X. Rosary Mary, Director, Mind Tree Blossoms, Tuticorin and officials from the Department of Posts attended.
A special cover on Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Limited was also released by Ms. Charukesi and it was received by M. Gunasekaran, Deputy General Manager of TMB, (Business Development) on the occasion.
